Electrical Safety Tips – Helping You Sleep Tight

Did you know that the average person will spend just over 12,000 days in bed during their lifetime (hard to even fathom)? We spend most of our time in the bedroom, which might come as a surprise if you think you spend a lot of time in the kitchen or watching TV in the living room. No, it’s the bedroom that we spend most of our time in, and of course, sleeping.

So how often have you considered the safety of the electrics or other hazards in the bedroom? We all worry about the safety of electrics in the kitchen or bathroom, but somehow the bedroom seems like a safe haven, where nothing major can go wrong.

We’ve written some top tips to make sure your bedroom is electrically safe.

  1. Avoid charging electrical devices (phones, tablet) on your bed or under your pillow while you sleep. The device could overheat and cause a fire. We’d even go so far as recommending you avoid charging devices unattended or overnight at all, and always make sure you leave them on a hard surface.
  2. Typically sockets aren’t in the best locations in your bedroom, but consider not overusing extensions.
  3. If you own your property, we’d recommend getting a fire alarm/smoke detector fitted on every level in the house (rented properties tend to have these rules enforced).
  4. Don’t use cables or charging leads that are showing wear and tear, these are serious hazards that can result in a fire. The same applies for electric blankets (which are common sources of fires within the bedroom).
  5. If you’re using a portable heater to keep warm (and we don’t blame you!), make sure you keep it away from any flammable materials like curtains, clothes hung up on the door, paper etc.
