Aberystwyth university, Physics building, New Digital system laboratory. This medium sized refurbishment project transformed an aging classroom and store into a modern teaching space and laboratory; As main contractor J&E Woodworks managed several specialised sub-contractors, including Electrical Estimates who under took the electrical, power, lighting and data networking. The project involved installation of a modular suspended floor which created a service void to install all the power and data required to feed floor boxes, consolidation points and perimeter trunking, leaving the ceiling free for the clean installation of suspended cable tray for the lighting and air conditioning. The central desks were built on site and are supplied via a non-fixed umbilical and consolidation point set ups, allowing desks to be repositioned to suit new classroom layouts giving the space more flexibility as requirements change.
As well as over 100no new CAT6 data lines, Electrical Estimates also installed over 300meters of single mode fibre optic campus links to neighbouring buildings to upgrade network connectivity.
Electrical Estimates also applied their re-use and up-cycling skills to deliver a more economical project by utilising existing LED lighting already present in the building as well as lighting removed from other university projects, rather than supplying and installing new light fittings.
We learned a lot from this project and look to apply that knowledge going forward on similar classroom and laboratory installations.
